The Reviews for Beirut (2018) 720p

Xenophobic and reductive.Reviewed byCitizenReviewerVote: 1/10

It's obvious that the writers in this film didn't do any research and didn't care much for ethics in film making. There's probably many compelling stories to tell from the non-fictional Lebanese Civil War, but this reductive over-simplified trash doesn't do it anywhere near justice. Just brainless directors and lazy writers using brown people for film-making target practice. 0/10 stars.

Sparked my interest in the Beirut conflictReviewed byview_and_reviewVote: 7/10

Beirut is a gritty movie that deals with a sensitive and depressing topic. It's depressing because:

1.) War and death is always depressing no matter who it befalls.2.) These things really happened so that makes it doubly depressing.

The title pretty much gives away the main premise of the movie. Before 1972 Lebanon was known as the Paris of the Middle East an enjoyed prosperity. Whether you regard that as a good title or a bad title the bottom line is the people were at least safe and secure. That is until a civil war erupted. Beirut (the movie) is mainly about a negotiator who has to negotiate the release of his friend with the back drop being the conflict in the same city. Wars are never black and white so this one was no exception. Mason Skiles (Jon Hamm), had to walk a tight rope as he attempted to secure his friend's return while discerning what was truth and what was falsehood.

I don't think anyone watches this movie completely unbiased. I suspect that the majority of the people that watched Beirut watched it because they 1.) have a connection to the conflict--directly or indirectly, 2.) remember the conflict and want to know more about it, or 3.) are history buffs. In any case I also suspect that the viewers had biases going in... I know I did. Whatever your biases were and whoever came out on top of the Beirut saga the people of Lebanon were sure to lose.

As Mason Skiles dutifully worked to get his friend Cal (Mark Pellegrino) back we got a cliff notes version of the major players in the Lebanese civil war. There were the Arab Christians, the Arab Muslims, the PLO, Israel and the U.S: each of them having an agenda with the people of Lebanon paying the largest toll. The movie was intense and very gritty with the setting being a hot, divided and decimated Lebanon. The story was well written and seemed to pay a lot of attention to the details of the goings-on of that time. I think the movie is just a teaser for anyone really interested in the whole episode. I know I will be looking to learn more.

Horrible..Reviewed byadonis98-743-186503Vote: 7/10

Caught in the crossfires of civil war, CIA operatives must send a former U.S. diplomat to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind. Despite the likes of talented actors such as John Hamm, Rosamund Pike and Dean Norris 'Beirut' was an absolute snooze fest, the film literally starts with a John Hamm who was either cgi or full of make up and then continues with a Dean Norris with a fake wig that looks like a Turtle Ninja. Overall complete waste of time and talent!!!
